Meet the Band

Andrew Clark – Musical Director
Tracey Clark (Tenor Horn)
David (Bass)
Eric Borland (Euphonium)
I learned to play trumpet at school and had played intermittently since then. I joined the band in 1992 as a cornet player, but currently play euphonium, an instrument I love.
Being able to play music is, to me, a great joy, and to join with others in creatinga  good sound is what I look forward to each week.
Amanda Grindall (Flugelhorn)
After following Brian’s progress for several years and loving being included as part of the  “family” that is a brass band, I eventually felt compelled to join him.  As a complete beginner, learning how to read music and to play the cornet was a stretch, but also an exciting challenge.  I now play the Flugelhorn and continue to grow in confidence with regular teaching through Zoom and support from my fellow Arran Brass members.
Jill Hollick (Tenor Horn)
I first joined Arran Brass way back in 1999! Ian Cargill (the first Band Master) taught me to read music for the very first time and to play my Cornet, what a challenge it all was, but ultimately most enjoyable. I then had a sabbatical of well over 12 years and rejoined the Band in 2020. I now play the Horn and I’m loving it all over again!
Pam Springthorpe (Baritone)
Currently the ‘new recruit’ but hoping to lose that badge! “
I had played the piano as a child, but never even held a brass instrument. Jill (whose enthusiasm fed my interest)  assured me, that she had learnt without knowing anything about music.
The band have been very encouraging as I started on my new adventure to learn the baritone, aided by the patient teacher Alan. The biggest high was being told after 5 months that I could play with them. Still a long way to go to reach their standard, but it’s great to feel part of the team.
Chrissy Archbold (Cornet)
I started playing the trumpet at school at the age of 7 and played it off and on for many years, including playing jazz semi-professionally in London.

I took up the cornet a twelve years ago to join a brass band  and was delighted to find a brass band on Arran when we moved here. It’s been a real treat to join the band and get to know people and the island. Playing carols at Christmas is really a magical way to add atmosphere to the season and performing at various events around the island during the summer is great fun!
